On Tuesday, Senator the Honourable Paula Gopee-Scoon, Minister of Trade and Industry, received a courtesy visit from the His Excellency Rashad Intigam Oglu Novruz, the newly-appointed Ambassador of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.
The meeting facilitated the introduction of Ambassador Novruz, who presented Credentials to Her Excellency Christine Carla Kangaloo, O.R.T.T., President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces earlier on Tuesday 5 June, 2024.
During discussions, the parties expressed their readiness to explore opportunities for enhancing bilateral trade relations, noting that diversification continues to be key for both countries having historically depended on the energy and petrochemical industries.
Describing Trinidad and Tobago as investment friendly, Minister Gopee-Scoon noted the potential for growth in the country’s agriculture sector in terms of the production of rice, vegetables, dairy, poultry and fish toward improving food security.
With food security also of concern to Azerbaijan, Ambassador Novruz noted his country is a net importer of food. He also shared Azerbaijan’s interests in investing in the region. The country will host the United Nations Climate Change Conference or COP 29 later this year.
Ambassador Novruz is resident in Brasilia, Brazil and along with Trinidad and Tobago is appointed to Ecuador, Suriname and Guyana.
