The Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) hosted a Sensitization Session with scrap metal dealers on Wednesday 17 April 2024 at the Trinidad and Tobago Bureau of Standards (TTBS) Auditorium. The Session was attended by the Trinidad and Tobago Scrap Iron Dealers Association (TTSIDA) and approximately eighty (80) scrap metal dealers and aimed to facilitate information sharing and capacity building on the process and documentary requirements to apply for licences under the new Scrap Metal Act 2022. The Session included participation from key regulatory agencies in the industry namely; the Trade Licence Unit and Single Electronic Window (SEW) Unit of the MTI; the Town and Country Planning Division (TCPD); and the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS).
Scrap Metal Dealers received information on the application process for scrap metal dealers’ licences and Export Licences; as well as the role of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service under the new Scrap Metal Regime. Dealers also benefitted from live demonstrations on the TTBizLink and DevelopTT Platforms.
Dealers were encouraged to use the information presented at the Sensitization Session to facilitate their submission of licences under the new regime.
Acting Deputy Permanent Secretary Mrs. Ava Mahabir-Dass, highlighted that since the reopening of the industry, the Trade Licence Unit has issued four hundred and sixty-three (463) Export Licences, as at April, 9, 2024. Mrs. Mahabir-Dass stated that the Ministry of Trade and Industry “in collaboration with other key agencies is seeking to provide as much support and guidance as possible” to make the transition into the new Scrap Metal Licensing regime easier.
The Ministry of Trade and Industry reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the growth and enhancement of the Scrap Metal Industry in Trinidad and Tobago.
