16 October, 2018: – The Government of Trinidad and Tobago has agreed to advance discussions with Chile for a Partial Scope Trade Agreement (PSTA). This was disclosed by Senator the Honourable Paula Gopee-Scoon, Minister of Trade and Industry on Friday 12 October, 2018 arising from a courtesy visit by the newly appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Chile His Excellency Aníbal Barría Garcua. His Excellency also expressed Chile’s interest in furthering trade relations with Trinidad and Tobago, with both Parties committing to work towards the finalization of a preferential trading arrangement before the end of 2019.
Discussions at the meeting centred on increasing the promotion of Trinidad and Tobago in Chile as a manufacturer of quality products, such as rum and chocolates. The parties also identified promotional opportunities in the area of tourism. Minister Gopee-Scoon received an invitation to host a trade mission to Chile to further increase trade and linkages among the private sectors of both countries.
His Excellency highlighted existing collaborations of benefit to both countries such as Chile’s participation in the Trinidad and Tobago’s Film Festival and Chilean nationals undertaking managerial roles in the private sector. The meeting agreed to continue discussions towards the exploration of business opportunities in the area of solar.
