The Ministry of Trade and Industry is saddened to learn of the passing of business magnate, Helen Bhagwansingh, founder of Bhagwansingh’s Hardware and Steel Industries Ltd.

Mrs. Helen Bhagwansingh who, together with her husband, Hubert, grew the Bhagwansingh operations from a small shed in Sea Lots, Port of Spain, into a successful enterprise with outlets in Chaguanas, Marabella, and Trincity, was highly regarded in the business community for her strong business acumen throughout her life. This acumen led to the expansion of the Bhagwansingh operations and the acquisition of other businesses in the construction sector including Dansteel Ltd, Rainbow Construction Ltd, and Central Trinidad Steel Ltd, among others.

Extending condolences on the passing of the business magnate, Senator the Honourable Paula Gopee-Scoon said, “Mrs. Helen Bhagwansingh has left an indelible mark on the national community, not just because of her business endeavours, but also through her significant contributions to society. Such commitment to business and community service should be admired.”

Over the years, Bhagwansingh’s businesses contributed significantly to growth and development in the commercial and manufacturing sectors, and collectively, these businesses have provided employment to many.

Mrs. Bhagwansingh was also well known for her keen sense of corporate social responsibility and her contributions to community development. Over the years, she contributed significantly towards many charities including making major contributions to diabetes education, research, and prevention in Trinidad and Tobago. In 2011, she was bestowed the nation’s highest award, the Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, for Community Service. Helen Bhagwansingh’s passing is a loss to the business and national community. At the Ministry of Trade and Industry, we offer deepest condolences to the Bhagwansingh family during this time of mourning.
