Senator the Honourable Paula Gopee-Scoon, Minister of Trade and Industry, met with the Honourable Hugh Hilton Todd, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Guyana, on January 15, 2025, via Videoconference. The meeting was requested by Minister Gopee-Scoon to discuss the status of ongoing matters affecting trade between both countries.
Minister Gopee-Scoon was accompanied by Mr. Randall Karim, Permanent Secretary (Ag.), and technical officials of the Ministry of Trade and Industry. Minister Todd was accompanied by Ambassador George Tallbot, Guyana’s Ambassador to CARICOM and technical officials of the trade department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
Among the issues discussed were trade in milk, honey, and coconut-based products, the registration of pharmaceuticals in Trinidad and Tobago and logistical issues impacting trade. Both parties provided updates on each item and agreed on concrete follow-up activities.
Both Ministers recognised the importance of addressing these matters and agreed on Ministerial and technical level engagements to advance resolution of issues. The Ministers also agreed that follow-up discussions would be held by the High-Level Bilateral Commission, which was established under a Memorandum of Understanding between both countries on Renewed and Enhanced Cooperation in 2022.
